The Forgery Mystery: A Virtual Art Museum Scavenger Hunt
Can you find the fake and the forger?
Maybe you’d like to solve a mystery that’s a little less, um, murdery. Here it is! In this virtual art museum scavenger hunt, an unknown figure in the art world has stolen a masterpiece, replaced it with a forgery, and now is taunting the police—and you—to spot the fake, find the last masterpiece, and identify the forger. Are you up for the challenge?
On teams, via Zoom, your group will explore a wide variety of websites for museums across America, searching for works of art that reveal clues for your investigation. The forger has included random close-up images of artwork that might, or might not, provide the key to unraveling the mystery.
Along the way, you might need to…
- Brave a confrontation with a menacing skeleton at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
- Think really small to search a tiny kitchen at the Art Institute of Chicago
- Take a close look at yourself as you peer at a nail-studded man at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
- Behold the hand of the Headless Horseman at the American Art Museum
And those are just a few of the many stops along the way to a solution. Good news: You don’t need any previous knowledge of art or museums. You just need sharp eyes, a desktop computer, and great teamwork. Our game host will check in with you along the way to make sure you’re having fun—and that you bring the forger to justice.
