SAN FRANCISCO SCAVENGER HUNTS

See your world with new eyes on a scavenger hunt. Teams of up to six people will tackle tricky, humorous questions about the objects and places discovered. Don’t have a team? We’ll help you find kindred spirits at the start of the hunt. No knowledge of any hunt location is required—you just need a sharp mind and a good pair of shoes. More than 125,000 hunters served since 1999.

Advance purchase is required for all hunts. To purchase tickets, go to the Calendar or Descriptions of the Hunts, or call our ticketing service, OvationTix, at 866-811-4111 (Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Please note that there is a $1 surcharge for phone orders.

CHINATOWN & NORTH BEACH

The North Beach and Chinatown Chase Scavenger Hunt
Explore the historic heart of the Barbary Coast and the immigrant culture that has made it thrive. In Jackson Square, you’ll uncover the history of the city’s oldest and handsomest buildings, survivors of the 1906 earthquake. In Chinatown, you may think you’ve left America as you hunt for answers among stores, herb shops, temples and even a fortune cookie factory. And in the North Beach section you’ll find Francis Ford Coppola’s headquarters and check out cafes and bakeries that will make you think you’ve gone to Italy. Along the way, you'll see the haunts of such writers as Jack Kerouac, Robert Louis Stevenson, Bret Harte and Amy Tan. You'll also be challenged not to overindulge on snacks ranging from Chinese moon cakes to gelato.

DE YOUNG MUSEUM

de Young & de Restless Scavenger Hunt
Recommended by the San Francisco Bay Guardian
Go on a whirlwind tour of the best of the de Young, a stunning jewel in San Francisco’s crown. You’ll search for answers to quirky, funny questions about intriguing objects you must find in the collections of American paintings and sculpture, African art, art of the Americas and more. Highlight include a blown-up church, an atomic owl, snaggle-fingered pianist, a Nigerian crying game, a Kongo man who should sue his acupuncturist, a cocoa coffin, a headhunter’s home furnishings, a barbarous barber, a view from the tower and a room overrun with dogs. You don’t need to know anything about art or the museum to win—you just need good teamwork and comfy shoes. No hunts currently scheduled. Sign up for the hunt newsletter to keep posted!

The Murder at the de Young Scavenger Hunt
Someone, or some thing, has been bumping off museum staffers involved in acquiring an ancient Aztec relic. Is it the dreaded Curse of Itlkilyu? Or is a serial killer on the loose? Your team of sleuths will have to crack a hieroglyphic code and uncover the museum’s secrets to stop the killings. Warning: this is one of our most challenging hunts. We strongly recommend hunting with a team of three or more. If you sign up with fewer than three people, we suggest pairing up with others at the start of the hunt to form a larger team. Please note that ticket sales for this hunt close at noon on the Friday before the hunt!
